From Hobby to Passion
I often get asked why I started fly fishing. I answer that fly fishing was visually appealing to me, and that I had romanticized the sport for the vast majority of my childhood. Little did I know that this romanticized sport would become a burning passion in my life.
I've spent a vast majority of my young life trying to figure it out and to be completely honest, I still haven't. I have figured this out however, that we all need something in this life to be passionate about. We all need an escape.
Healthy obsession is the key to sanity in this crazy life that can flip upside down in the blink of the eye. Because of the wide array of emotions we can experience in such as short amount of time, we as humans need a form of stability in our life. My stability is my faith and my obsession with fly fishing.
I'm not the best Christian. I struggle with my daily walk with God and I am thankful that I serve a forgiving Savior in Jesus Christ.
But my obsession is fly fishing. I have always loved the outdoors, but I wouldn't have called any outdoor activity prior to fly fishing an obsession. Fly fishing has filled a void in my life. Many things come and go but the feeling I get when I fly fish is something that has staying power. Fly fishing gives me a connection to nature that I have never experienced in my entire life. I have a sense of belonging when I fly fish. I feel like I have a new found meaning.
So I challenge you. Find something you are passionate about. And do it.
Don't worry about if it's cool. Don't worry if it will make you popular. Do what you love. And when you find what you have a passion for, share it with the world. Few things make me as excited as seeing someone chase their passion.
I credit this blog topic to my good friend Markus. He reminded me how important it is to find something you are passionate about and use it to do something creative and productive. Thanks Mark for the kind words and the idea for this blog post.
